Working in the vineyards

From the beginning of the adventure, Georges, Paul and Romain decided to avoid any excessive treatment of the vines and vineyards and to apply only the minimum care program prescribed by the Luxembourg Institute of Viticulture. Various measures were therefore taken to help the vine to defend itself naturally against attacks.

An environmentally friendly management of the vineyards has been introduced in the plots, following the motto: as much intervention as necessary, as little intervention as possible. The greening of the vineyard helps to limit erosion and create an environment that favors the development of spontaneous flora and a habitat for fauna and insects, thus promoting biodiversity. The soil between the vines and the greening between the rows are mechanically worked, creating a natural protection that protects our vines from disease.

Careful manual work is carried out on the vines themselves all year round. The aim of these measures is twofold:

  • to provide the grapes with the healthiest possible environment for their growth

  • to promote the concentration and quality of the grapes in order to obtain the best possible must

These measures create the best conditions for the annual maturation of our liquid gold. Here are some important basic interventions briefly explained:

  • manual defoliation under the trained eye of the winemaker

    • protects vines and young shoots from mechanical injuries

    • more sunlight

    • Reduction of moisture in the vines (fungal infestation)

    • leads to a better distribution of energy to the growing grapes

  • Before the actual harvest and during the growing season, we remove grapes, called green harvest, to limit the yield of a vine. This usually happens just before the fruits begin to ripen and then become more flavorful

  • repeated, targeted pruning and cutting back using large hand shears

  • Mulching the pruning for self-fertilization

  • manual selective harvesting of the grapes by highly trained harvesters in order to obtain an absolutely pure, high-quality raw material
